“Collage” is the second album by César Latorre Trío, released by the Free Code Jazz label in 2015.
This record features original compositions by Latorre, performed alongside the trio's members: Greek double bassist Petros Klampanis and Latvian drummer Artis Orubs.
Drawing inspiration from Stravinsky's famous remark, “the hard part is choosing among infinite possibilities,” César narrows his focus to three key elements: clear triads, loops, and surprising melodies.
The title “COLLAGE” perfectly encapsulates the nature of these compositions, where sections fluidly transition between one another, often defying traditional structural roles and avoiding the reexpositions our ears typically expect.
In this album, listeners will encounter moments of “billevansian” style, hip hop influences, complex rhythms, and passages of delicate intimacy, all infused with a rock attitude. There are even electronic drum elements that may alienate some jazz purists.
The aim is not to spark a revolution or rebel for the sake of it, but rather to play with listener expectations, employing unconventional lyricism and cohesively linking disparate elements, much like in a collage.
